Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is the biggest and most colorful carnival in the world celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana.
It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that everyone should try to attend at least once. The energy, excitement, and color of the carnival are unforgettable. About 20 years ago, I visited Mardi Gras, and I still think of some of the sights, tastes, and sounds today. While there I tried a hearty crawfish sandwich on a brioche bun. I absolutely fell in love. The flavorful crawfish tails and zesty sauce perfectly captured the essence of Louisiana cuisine.
A highlight of the celebration to many is the incredible food that’s served during the festivities. From jambalaya to gumbo, and everything in between, the cuisine is flavorful, bold, and full of spice.
One dish that’s particularly popular during Mardi Gras is a crawfish sandwich on a brioche bun. This tasty sandwich is packed with juicy, tender crawfish tails, and a zesty mixture of mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, celery, and green onions. Here’s how to make a delicious crawfish sandwich that will transport you straight to the heart of Mardi Gras.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. crawfish tails, peeled and deveined
- 2 tbsp. butter
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp. hot sauce
- 1/4 cup chopped celery
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 brioche buns, sliced in half
- Lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomatoes
Instructions:
Step 1: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the crawfish tails and cook for 2–3 minutes, until heated through. Make sure to stir the crawfish tails occasionally to ensure that they are evenly cooked.
Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, celery, and green onions. Stir the mixture until well combined, then add the cooked crawfish tails to the mixture. Mix the ingredients together until the crawfish is evenly coated with the sauce.
Step 3: Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to taste. Remember that the crawfish tails have a naturally salty flavor, so you may not need to add much additional salt to the mixture.
Step 4: Toast the brioche buns on a griddle or in a toaster oven. This step is essential for creating a delicious and crispy texture for your sandwich. Be sure to toast the buns until they are golden brown and slightly crispy.
Step 5: Assemble the sandwiches by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun. The lettuce will provide a fresh and crunchy element to your sandwich.
Step 6: Divide the crawfish mixture evenly among the four buns. Make sure that each sandwich is generously filled with crawfish tails and sauce.
Step 7: Top each sandwich with sliced tomatoes and the top half of the bun. The tomatoes will provide a juicy and refreshing element to the sandwich, balancing out the bold flavors of the crawfish and sauce.
Step 8: Serve your delicious crawfish sandwich immediately and enjoy!
